Dancing with the Divine: Arts of India, Tibet and South East Asia

Noon – 1 p.m.

Discover why Shiva dances, the Buddha meditates, and Mahavira gives away all his possessions. Examine how Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain artists create art in the service of worship and devotion to their gods.

Target Family Day: Think Big!

Big ideas can lead to great things. Be inspired by Eero Saarinen’s model for the St. Louis Arch. Join in on a monumental activity by helping a local artist build a large sculpture out of LEGO® blocks. Craft your own architectural model to take home. Enjoy performances by Young Dance, a youth modern dance company. Plus, see and hear how composers and musicians think big—double-bass big!

Celebrate the art, dance, and music of India. Discover dances from Northern and Southern India in performances by Katha Dance Theater and Ragamala Music and Dance Theater. Watch demonstrations of rangoli, a traditional sand painting art. Try your hand making art in exciting studio activities and swing your hips during Indian dance workshops. Explore the MIA’s collection of Indian sculpture, painting, textiles, and jewelry. Free.

Get into a festive mood as you and your family discover traditions from a variety of cultures represented in the MIA’s collection. Hear great music, see fun-filled performances, and get creative with art-making activities. Plus, take a family-friendly tour of the MIA’s period rooms with a costumed guide. Free.
